What We Do

Baby TALK Early Head Start (BTEHS) has three different options for participation.  Information about each of the three options is listed below:

Parents-2-Be (P2B) Program: Pregnant women are assigned a qualified home visitor who will meet regularly with the expectant mother and members of her support system as applicable. Topics covered include: nutrition, substance abuse prevention, mental health and postpartum depression, breast feeding benefits, and prenatal development. There is a focus on healthy pregnancy outcomes and bonding with the baby. Referrals to community resources are given as appropriate. Participation in the P2B program gives a family priority for a slot after the baby is born and the mother completes the P2B program.

Center-Based Services: Forty-eight children participate in BTEHS center-based services. Our six classrooms each have eight children and two highly-qualified teachers. Each teacher has four "attachment children" for whom they are the primary caregiver. Children range in age from six weeks to three years. Classrooms follow a schedule similar to Decatur Public Schools schedule. During the summer, children receive a weekly 90-minute home visit from their attachment teacher. Children in center-based care receive breakfast and lunch each day as well as a nutritious snack. Diapers, wipes, formula, and baby food are all provided for children in this program option. Priority for center-based services is given to young families where the parent is in school and/or working, therefore demonstrating a need for childcare.

Home-Based Services: Twenty-two program slots are reserved for a combination of P2B and home-based children. P2B is explained in detail above. Children in the home-based program option receive weekly 90-minute home visits with a highly-qualified home visitor. The primary emphasis of home visits is child development, and parents are expected to participate fully in home visits as well as continue the learning process throughout the week, between visits.

All BTEHS children receive regular developmental screenings, as well as hearing and vision screenings. Our Wellness Coordinator assists families in locating a medical and dental home, and also helps families keep up-to-date with well-child visits and immunizations. Our Wellness Coordinator is available to make home visits and assist enrolled families as needed with any health-related concerns.

All services are provided free of charge to enrolled families. Families must qualify for the program. Eligibility is based on income, although other factors and extenuating circumstances are also considered. Children experiencing homelessness or in foster care, or families receiving SSI for disability, are categorically eligible for the program.
