What We Do

Our agency offers volunteer opportunities in many programs.  More about the programs:

BABES - The Beginning Awareness Basic Education Studies program combines puppets, stories and discussions designed to help school children develop positive living skills.  Volunteers bring the 6 week prevention program to K-3rd grade students in public and parochial schools.

(Currently suspended - COMMUNITY SERVICES/DECATUR AREA PROJECT - Neighbors are united through friendship and service as neighborhood groups are organized and Community Services staff utilized.  Adopting a grass-roots approach, the groups set goals and address problems of youth crime and delinquency.  Collaboration between the staff, neighbors, and other agencies makes a positive impact on their neighborhoods and the city of Decatur.)

DEWITT COUNTY FOOD PANTRY - Assisting DeWitt County residents with food and household items.

DAX & MAX - These  programs assist those in need with one-time emergency financial assistance.  In DeWitt County, DeWitt Assistance eXchange is funded though the United Way and is coordinated through Dove, implemented by an advisory committee of community volunteers. In Macon County, Macon Assistance eXchange has a coordinator through Dove, is housed and supported by Decatur First United Methodist Church, and implemented by many volunteers.  Monies are distributed through gifts from churches and individuals.  AmerenIP’s Warm Neighbors, Cool Friends energy assistance funds are also distributed through the program.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PROGRAM - The Domestic Violence Program provides comprehensive assistance and support to families affected by abuse in their lives.  The program serves five counties: DeWitt, Macon, Moultrie, Piatt, and Shelby.  Dedicated staff and trained volunteers provide the following services:   24-hour hotline; a safe and secure shelter for women and their children, located in Decatur; individual and group counseling for women and children;  legal advocacy; and children’s programming.

HOMEWARD BOUND - Services to individuals and families who find themselves homeless are consolidated through the Homeward Bound Program.  This program provides transitional housing, permanent supportive housing, case management and supportive services to homeless persons living in the Decatur area.  This program is part of the Homeless Council Continuum of Care.  Together, the council addresses most issues of homelessness and needed services.  Homeward Bound is a partnership of seven agencies.

RETIRED & SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM - RSVP matches the skills and life experience of volunteers aged 55 and over with the opportunities presented by nonprofit organizations in Macon and DeWitt counties.  RSVP manages a Children’s Clothing Room, where families can select free good quality clothing for their  children.

OUTREACH PROGRAMS - The Christmas Basket Drive provides food and gifts to more than 300 families each holiday season.  In a combined effort with Northeast Community Fund,  groups, individuals, churches and agencies throughout the Decatur area support this program.  Coats for Kids!, co-sponsored by WAND-TV, is a drive to provide winter coats.  Donated coats are cleaned by area dry cleaners and are distributed to area clothing rooms.
